Commercials From Your Childhood and Stupid Teenage Stunts…Now in HD!
As more TV shows and movies become available over the Internet—and more people download shows and movies instead of renting them or watching them on TV—the final hurdles for an all Internet broadcast future are starting to be reached. Case in point: Sony’s recent announcement that it’s exploring Internet capabilities for its TVs.
Another case in point: YouTube—that monolith of online video, home to relics of the past, videos of teenage stupidity, and seemingly clips from every movie known to man—has today started offering videos in high-definition. This is big news, to be sure, but it also comes with a hitch, as the tech site ReadWriteWeb notes:
As we pointed out in our earlier story about these HD videos, the quality is amazing and rivals that of some of YouTube’s closest competitors like Vimeo. However, it is also worth noting that you need a relatively fast broadband connection to watch these videos without constant stuttering and buffering.
The technology—and how news and entertainment is delivered—is changing fast, which is why now more than ever we need to be working on a National Broadband Strategy.
