Self-driving truck startup Locomation’s “truck platooning” technology could be the first step in moving the long-haul truck industry towards fully autonomous vehicles. Locomation’s trucks are designed to link together with vehicle-to-vehicle technology to form what the company calls an “Autonomous Relay Convoy (ARC),” where only the lead driver is actively engaged in driving and follower trucks are controlled through the ARC system.

The transition to fully self-driving trucks can take years, but the convoy technology represents a viable stepping stone towards this goal and could help improve safety, cost savings, and fuel efficiency in the interim.
