This year’s MLB home Run Derby will be like nothing you’ve seen before. Not only will the Angels’ star Shohei Ohtani make history as the first pitcher to compete, it’s also the first year baseball fans can watch the derby directly through the eyes of the player with 5G-enabled helmet cams. These 5G point-of-view cameras will live on the batters’ helmets and catchers’ mask and allow fans to view at-bats from players like Ohtani from their perspective.
In addition to the point-of-view cameras, MLB is releasing a new augmented reality mobile app for fans to explore the stadium in 3D and get detailed stats for each swing. Users with 5G phones will get additional real-time stats such like hang time and exit velocity throughout the Derby.
The action livestreams online starting July 12 at 6:30 PM Eastern.
