A new robot developed by Facebook Connectivity traverses and installs fiber-optic cable atop telephone wire at a much quicker pace than traditional installation methods, slashing time and costs associated with connecting underserved communities.
Dubbed “Bombyx,” the robot technology glides along the wire, navigating telephone poles while wrapping wires with fiber-optic cable. Since power lines reach most of the world, Bombyx offers a solution that can be deployed by air, anywhere in the world, and provides significant installation savings compared to laying cable trenches. If brought to market, the company believes the technology could radically change connectivity around the world.
