A survey from Utah State University’s Center for Growth and Opportunity found that over 67% of Americans think tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook are too big, and 49% believe that the government should break them up. For each of the nine companies mentioned in the survey, less than 40% of Americans trusted them with collecting and using personal data.

The research also suggests that the presidential election in November 2020 caused participants to be more likely to support government regulation of social media companies than they were earlier in the year.

Additionally, while 85% of participants agreed that free speech was necessary on social media, around two-thirds of respondents also thought these platforms should be held accountable for inaccurate information and that they should ban hate groups from their platforms.
