A report from data.ai shows that global app downloads reached 37 billion in the first quarter of 2022 across iOS and Google Play, up 11% year-over-year. Consumer spending on apps also grew in the first quarter of this year and proved to be the most ever at $33 billion. iOS apps claimed the majority of the app ecosystem’s growth, making up 65% of the quarter’s total consumer spending. The figure for overall spending climbed 42% over the past two years.
Games, entertainment and photo and video apps were the top categories for spending. The firm also highlighted smaller categories seeing an uptick in consumer spending, including iOS medical apps (up 23%) and health and fitness apps (up 20%). On Android, growth categories include personalization, food and drink, and auto and vehicle apps.
