Freelance and contract work, also known as the “gig economy,” is on the rise. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the contingent workforce now makes up between 1.3 and 3.8 percent of total employment. The proliferation of high-speed internet and mobile device ownership has been a significant factor in this growth.
According to a recent Morning Consult survey, adults that identify as being gig economy workers have similar satisfaction levels with their jobs as the adult workforce as a whole, and are slightly more satisfied with regards to pay, opportunities for advancement, ability to improve skills and education at work, and work/life balance. The graph below shows job satisfaction levels for gig workers and the adult workforce as a whole.
