A recent study by Pew Research Center finds that 72% of U.S. adults think social media companies wield too much power and influence over politics. Majorities of both Democrats and Republicans were likely to express this view, though Republicans to a greater extent — 82% of Republicans versus 63% of Democrats.

Today, roughly half of U.S. adults support more government regulation of big tech companies; however, that number has seen a slight decline since 2018. Between 2018 and 2020, the share of conservative Republicans who believe big tech needs more regulation increased, whereas the share of moderate/liberal Republicans, conservative/moderate Democrats, and liberal Democrats who hold this view declined.
