As the need for broadband access grows, telecom operators are making investments to increase their fiber footprints. A recent report from financial analysts at Cowen found that telecom operators are expected to expand fiber to 5 million more homes in 2021. This brings fiber access to approximately 42 million in the U.S. At this rate, Cowen calculates that more than 50% of U.S. households will have fiber access by 2025.

AT&T, for example, will deploy fiber to an additional 3 million locations across 90 metro areas around the U.S. this year. Smaller providers such as Frontier Communications and Windstream have also announced fiber expansions this year.
