With the ongoing pandemic increasing the need for reliable internet service at home, both government and private companies want to ensure widespread broadband access for Americans. However, a recent study from Morning Consult shares that 75% of U.S. adults trust private companies for internet service, 21 percentage points higher than the 54% who said they trust the government to provide at-home internet services.
The heightened trust in private companies could be attributed to people’s familiarity with their current broadband provider or an awareness of the potential failures of public infrastructure. Many government entities aren’t able to make the continuous investments in infrastructure maintenance and upgrades that the private sector can. 14% of adults also stated that government should not be allowed to consider municipal broadband options.
