New research from USTelecom, “US vs EU Broadband Trends (2012-2020),” features updated research showing the United States continues to lead the European Union (EU) in broadband deployment and adoption, while also outpacing Europe on broadband investment and competition.

A few highlights from the report:

  • The US benefits from nearly twice the fixed facilities-based competition of the EU overall. When comparing rural areas, the US lead extends to 7x.
  • In terms of deployment of ≥30 Mbps, the US has reached 91% of rural areas, compared to the EU, which has reached 87% overall and 60% of rural areas.
  • 55% of connected US households and 34% in the EU had ≥100 Mbps subscriptions in 2020.

As stated by USTelecom, the findings “offer compelling validation that the US regulatory model – one that encourages vigorous private investment in continually building, maintaining and upgrading US broadband infrastructure—has yielded superior outcomes for American consumers and the nation’s digital future, when compared to the EU’s more heavily regulatory approach.”
