A new Pew Research Center study analyzed Google Image Search results that depict men and women working in common jobs, then compared those results with real-world data on gender distribution in the U.S. workforce. The study found that men were generally overrepresented in online images relative to their actual workforce participation. Women were generally underrepresented in image search results, with concentrations of underrepresentation in a few jobs, such as bill collector, medical records technician, bartender, and probation officer. Women were, however, overrepresented in image search results for the jobs of singer, mechanic, computer programmer, and police officer.
