IIA released the following statement calling for Congress to pass, this year, a law protecting the core principles of an open internet — no blocking, no throttling, no censorship, no unfair discrimination based on online content.
Today, the FCC’s Restoring Internet Freedom Order goes into effect. We applaud the FCC for taking action to return the internet to an even playing field and reaffirm our strong conviction that the FCC made the right decision: The right decision for consumers, for whom the internet works as well today as it did yesterday; The right decision for investment, which can once again grow so that more Americans will benefit from faster broadband everywhere; The right decision for innovation, as investment and competition are the forces that drive it and keep America the world’s leader in internet innovation; and, The right decision for the internet itself, as the internet will once again be subject to the rules under which it grew and flourished for nearly 20 years.
But as grateful as we are for the Commission’s action and today’s implementation, we cannot rest here. The broadband internet is too important to our national life. We once again call on Congress to pass, this year, a law protecting the core principles of an open internet – no blocking, no throttling, no censorship, no unfair discrimination based on online content — including robust consumer privacy protections that apply to all entities in the internet ecosystem no matter how consumers access the internet.
Only that action can settle the issue permanently and ensure that the principles of a truly open internet will have the force of statutory law.”
